Do I need Insurance?
Markets and vendors need Comprehensive General Liability (CGL) insurance for bodily injury and property damage suffered by a customer at the market.
The “liability insurance” we have with FMO is to cover accidents by shoppers at the market including our volunteers, Board members and market staff. It does not provide property or product insurance coverage for vendors.
Vendors operating retail/wholesale outlets, in addition to their market stand, require their own Comprehensive General Liability (CGL) insurance. Vendors who produce and sell alcohol (beer, wine, and spirits) also require their own Comprehensive General Liability (CGL) insurance.
Examples:
A vendor owns or operates a retail store/outlet/warehouse; retail alcohol outlet; food truck owner; local store front XYZ business selling non-food products including commercial bakeries (not the home baker or approved kitchen baker) must provide a
certificate of insurance from their insurance provider adding Aurora Farmers Market and Farmers' Market Ontario as additional named insured. Therefore, are not covered under the FMO group insurance. Otherwise, all other vendors are covered under
FMO’s policy.
This includes: A food vendor who sell at a farmers’ market where he/she prepares the food in an approved kitchen is covered under FMO’s policy. The relationship between a food vendor and the food facility is not relevant to the FMO’s insurance. In addition, all producers/farmers selling at the farmers’ market who owns their own “on-farm store” (considered an extension of their own farm) is also covered under FMO insurance.
Once your application has been approved, you must provide (2) separate certificates of insurance (COI) from your insurance provider: 1) Naming Aurora Farmers’ Market as an “additional insured” 2) Naming the Officers & Directors of Farmers’ Markets Ontario, 54 Bayshore Road, Brighton, ON, K0K 1H0 as an “additional insured”
Your Certificates of Insurance must be received prior to opening day. You will not be able to set up without it.
The summary of coverage is found on the Farmers' Market Ontario website.
